a Jehu killed Ahaziah king of Judah (9:27).
b Joram king of Israel (9:22-24), and Jezebel were killed in close succession (9:14-37). Shorty
thereafter Ahab’s seventy sons were massacred. The last surviving member of
Ahab’s line was Athaliah queen of Judah (daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and
daughter-in-law of Jehoshaphat). When Jehu killed Ahaziah, son of Jehoram and
Athaliah, Athaliah seized the throne of Judah and attempted to exterminate
the royal family of Judah
(11:1).
c Jehosheba, the sister of
Ahaziah of Judah, however, saved her infant nephew Joash and hid him for six
years, until he was made king at seven years of age (11:2-3, 21). Athaliah was
killed at Joash’s inauguration, thus terminating the line of Ahab and Jezebel.
