25:26 MT “And after them the
king of Sheshach” Sheshak is a cryptogram (see NRSV note) for Babylon (second to last
letter of the Hebrew alphabet, sh = b, second letter, and in like fashion k = l,
thus sh-sh-k = b-b-l, that is, Babel/Babylon). This Masoretic plus focuses on the
last act of God’s judgment against the nations, the judgment against Babylon.
Note the similar use of cryptogram in the oracle against Babylon in
Jeremiah 51:41.
