The location of the exorcism in Mark 5:1-20 (and parallels) is difficult. The Gospels variously use Gerasenes (Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26) and Gadara (Matthew 8:28). Gerasa (Gerasenes) has Roman ruins and temples but is 37 miles southeast of Galilee, and Gadara about five miles from the sea. These problems may have caused the variations in the manuscript traditions (see ESV footnotes). Many suspect the exorcism is set in Gergesa along the upper eastern shore of Galilee, which is the only place with a steep bank overlooking the sea (this identification goes back to the church historian Eusebius).
