activity four to read film, part 4 -- genre, intertextuality (A) View Enchanted, and any other one movie of student’s choice from list A or list B. As you view these films pay attention to the things related to the required reading. Complete reading report 4 on class page which will include a place to put your notes on the items mentioned above. (B) Write a paper including all of the following (no more than three pages total). (1) Read Bordwell and Thompson, Film Art: An Introduction (1990), 33-50 (see class page), Belton, American Cinema/American Culture, 4th ed., 70-81 [3d ed., 70-81], Schnittjer, “old-time Hollywood” in notes on film and culture, and view Hollywood Style. Based on Bordwell and Thompson, 33-50 define the function in film of the following: form, audience expectations, delayed expectations, suspense, surprise, conventions, genre, explicit meaning (the “point”), realistic criteria of evaluation, function, motif, parallelism, difference and variation, development, unity and disunity (one page). (2) View “That’s How You Know” from Enchanted (below). What is Giselle’s genre of reality? Robert’s? Why does the setting/narrative space lend itself to the genres of both Giselle and Robert? Which causes and effects are rooted in each of these two genres of “narrative reality”? How does the scene accord with classic Hollywood narration? (one page) (3) Read the link here concerning intertextuality. Enchanted presents a large number of allusions to Disney films and also to The Sound of Music, often poking fun at old Disney myths. Read the links here regarding the visual and other allusions in Enchanted. What are two allusions in “That’s How You Know” and how do they function in this scene? (one page) (4) Turn in paper on class page. Copyright © ScriptureWorkshop.com |
