As you view these films pay attention to the things related to the textbook reading (see below). Complete reading report 2 on class page which will include a place to put your notes on the items mentioned above. (B) Write a paper including all of the following (no more than three pages total). (1) Read Belton, American Cinema/American Culture, 4th ed., 52-63 [3d ed., 52-63]. Based on the reading define the function in film of the following: three-point lighting, high-key lighting, low-key lighting, star lighting; musical score, music and sound within the shot; classic continuity editing, shot, scene, cut, fade, dissolve, iris-in and iris-out, wipe, linear structure, flashback structure, parallel editing, establishing or master shot, matches, eyeline matches, point-of-view editing, 180-degree rule, shot/reverse shot (one page). (2) View christening scene of The Godfather (see below). Write a paragraph each describing how the christening scene from the Godfather functions with respect to lighting, sound, and editing. Use what you learned from the required reading(s) (one page). (3) Read and take notes on Belton 4th ed., 123-124, and chap 6 (melodrama) [3d ed., 123-125, and chap 6]. View again the christening scene of the Godfather and explain it in terms of the function of melodrama in the textbook reading (one page). (4) Turn in paper on class page.
