The
writing prophets placed closer to the left preached against Israel and to
the right against Judah; those with asterisks against other nations, namely, Jonah and Nahum preached
against Assyria, and Obadiah against Edom (their
books, however, are testimonies to God’s people). There is no evidence to know who, when, or where Joel should be
situated. Deportations of Jerusalem took place in c. 605 (Dan 1:1), 597
(2 Kgs 24:8), and 586 (2 Kgs 25).
Dates taken from Cogan, ABD,
1: 1005-11 (for alternate see Thiele, Albright; also see Walton and Hill, 208).
Saul’s timing unclear—cf. 1 Sam 13:1 MT (NRSV and ESV trans. gets the basic sense); (if
from Acts 13:21 is “40” stylized?).
